Communications Coordinator

We are seeking a creative, tech savvy individual to join our team. Our Communications Coordinator helps to manage all of our online communication platforms including social media, website, blog, newsletter, and outreach campaigns. We are looking for someone with photography/video skills that will help us capture the story of our work and get it out into the world. This is a great opportunity for the right person - you will be working with a supportive team, living in a beautiful place, eating farm fresh food, and engaging in meaningful work. Our 10 acre farm we is surrounded by nature, animals, and plant life, and provides a rich environment for a visual artist to find inspiration.

Primary Responsibilities include:HIP Ag communications coordinator flyer

  • Creating content (images/video/writing) for social media
  • Maintaining social media accounts and engaging with followers
  • Brainstorming content and marketing ideas
  • Coordinating online campaigns to promote farm and educational programs
  • Keeping online communications updated (website, blog, newsletters)

This position is 25-30 hours/week, and in exchange we provide:

  • Private housing accommodations
  • Access to 1000 sq. ft. shared kitchen and study space
  • Shared hot/cold showers, composting toilets and washing machine on site
  • Community food supplies (vegetables and fruit harvested from land, bulk grains and legumes)
  • Walking distance to nearby swimming and surfing spots
  • Access to HIP Ag libraries, educational events, etc
  • $100 weekly stipend

We ask that community members participate in 2-5 hours/week of community activities (maintaining shared spaces, work plan meetings, potluck dinners, educational activities). This varies throughout the year.

We have many exciting projects on the horizon for 2017 and 2018, and we are looking for people who can make a commitment of 1 year or longer, to help us bring these projects to fruition. The Communications Coordinator will play an important role in getting out the message about our work and helping us build our membership base. We are looking for someone who is passionate about creating change, and will be a positive and responsible addition to our existing team.

Farmer / Market Gardener

We are seeking an individual or couple to manage our market garden operations. The ideal candidate(s) will have experience in high production vegetable farming and be comfortable working in a dynamic outdoor environment. The garden manager position will play a key role in maintaining our market garden and contributing to the daily flow and productivity of the farm. We are looking for someone who is passionate about creating change and will be a positive and responsible addition to our existing team. We are ideally looking for someone to start mid-July or August 1st. We ask for a minimum 1-year commitment.

Market Garden Responsibilities include:

  • Management of nursery care, seeding, and transplanting
  • Management of crop rotation and quality record keeping
  • Management of harvest for restaurants and farmers markets
  • Management of soil fertility, pest control, and weeds
  • Manage irrigation system and watering of the fields and nursery
  • Manage, educate and train new farm workers and students
  • Maintain a clean and organizes packing shed
  • Management of all garden supplies and tools
  • Bed prep: Being able to use a BCS and/or a tractor is a plus
  • Strong ability to communicate with others and work well within a community environment
  • Experience in working at Farmers Markets and Driving a Delivery Van is a plus
  • Must have a clean driving record and valid driver's license
  • Weekly managers and staff meeting
  • Occasional participation in educational activities and community engagement

Homestead Responsibilities:

  • Weekly chores to maintain the common areas
  • Milking 1 - 2 days a week
  • Weekly community dinners

Apprenticeship Programs

HIP Agriculture offers 3 Farm Apprenticeship positions on our organic farm and tropical agro-forest. Our apprenticeship program is open to graduates of the Living Farm Internship Program as well as individuals experienced in farm operations or offering a skilled trade.

Apprentices will have the opportunity to live and learn on the HIP Agriculture farm in exchange for 25-30 hours of farm work, field projects, food processing and special events. Working alongside the farm managers, and lead farmer and director, Dash, apprentices will gain valuable skills in permaculture, organic gardening, agroforestry, animal care, plant medicine, and more!

Farm Apprenticeship 

The gardens are a rich setting for experiential education and service learning in areas of agriculture, tropical permaculture, food justice and sovereignty. Apprentice’s learn all aspects of gardening while working closely with HIP Staff. We are looking for those who want to learn from working on our farm and living in our community to carry their experience into future endeavors.

Qualifications:

  • An excitement and desire to learn through hands-on on the farm.
  • A desire to learn through experiential hands-on gardening is essential.
  • Prior gardening experience is helpful but not necessary.
  • We are looking for motivated, self-starting people who can be comfortable occasionally working alone.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work for 6 hours is a must. We work outside rain or shine!
  • A desire to live and work in a community.

Facilities Apprenticeship 

If fixing vehicles, building structures, mending fences, tree work, plumbing and/or electrical work is your thing, you should apply for our Facilities Apprenticeship. This residential position focuses on maintaining and improving the infrastructure at HIP Agriculture around our mac-nut gulch, agro-forest, and organic farm. Tasks vary from simple, daily projects and maintenance to multi-week construction projects depending on your knowledge and skill set.

Facilities apprentices have the opportunity to work on a great deal of various projects in the following areas, depending on the work that needs to be done:

  • carpentry
  • plumbing
  • electrical
  • woodworking
  • forest management
  • Qualifications:
  • Ease of understanding and applying task instructions.
  • Ability to work equally as well alone or as part of a team.
  • Skills in any and all areas of the building trades are desirable but not necessary.
  • Ability to be flexible with hours and work assignments.
  • A valid driver’s license & clean driving record.

Culinary Apprenticeship

Culinary apprentices work on a variety of food preparation and processing projects on the farm and occasionally in a local commercial community kitchen. Summer apprentices will have the opportunity to support a week-long summer immersion and a farm to table dinner. Fall apprentices will have the opportunity to support community events and our fall Macadamia Nut harvest. Apprentices will learn from HIP’s Founder and the nutrition and food coordinator and our resident Natural Chef. This is an amazing opportunity for individuals wanting to gain experience in farm to table fare, bulk food preservation, cooking for large groups and events. Culinary apprentices will not only be limited to working on food related projects, but will gain of variety of work experiences on the farm and in the community.

  • Curiosity and passion for creating healthy food for your community.
  • Quick learner and ability to follow instruction.
  • Physical requirements include being able to life 50lbs and be on your feet for 6 hours.
  • Ability to be flexible with hours and work assignments.
  • Patience, humor and humility!

Fall/Winter Apprenticeship (November-March) & Summer Apprenticeship (May-August)

Apprenticeship includes 25 hours per week of farm projects in exchange for fresh farm food, full access to our Mango Kitchen, and a tent platform in our macadamia nut grove.

Apprentices work on average, Monday-Friday 8:00am-1:00pm
Participation in community life through contributing to weekly meetings, chore rotations, good communication, and cleanliness.
