Week One [Introduction to Permaculture and Design]

Topics: Presentation by Uncle Kai. Orientation of site. Foundations, ethics and principles of permaculture. Hawaiian climate and history. Principles of eco-village living. Permaculture Design, Zones and Sectors. Communication and Present Moment Awareness Practices.

Field Trip: Mohala Lehua

Community Event and Outreach: Loi Restoration, IOle Garden project

Week Two [Soil Food Web]

Topics: The soil community. Soil creation. Compost piles, sheet mulching, vermiculture, biochar. Exploring zones and sectors.

Guest Lecture: Brooks of Worm Works Hawaii on vermichar and building a worm bin

Community Event and Outreach: Kohala Middle garden work, Community Harvest

Week Three [Agroforestry and Mycology]

October 10-October 15

Topics: Polycultures. Agroforestry. Perennial cover. Mycology.

Guest Lecture: Micha Barker on polycultures and design work

Community Event and Outreach: Kohala Elementary garden work, Hawi Farmer’s market

Week Four [Hunting and Gathering – Self Sufficiency]

October 17- October 23

Topics: Design of the home system. Zone and Sector analysis. Begin site design planning. Harvest and process natural medicines.

Guest Lecture: Uncle Kai Hawaiian medicines workshop

Field Trip: Kyle and Kelly Farm in Pa’auilo, Chris Carter’s farm in Waipio

Community Event and Outreach: Kohala Elementary garden work, Waimea Farmer’s Market
