LOCATION
The HIP Agriculture campuses can be found just a few miles outside of the small town of Kapaau, Hawaii. This area of the Big Island is known as North Kohala, and area known as an ideal site for farming because it located between the extremely rainy, eastern side of the island (Hamakua, Hilo, and Puna) and the extremely dry western side (South Kohala and North and South Kona.) This northernmost tip of the island receives between 60 and 100 inches of rain a year, keeping the farm green and lush but not always under a downpour.
ARRIVAL
The Kailua/Kona (KOA) airport is the closest to HIP Agriculture at only an hour and fifteen minutes away. The Hilo airport (ITO) also receives many commercial flights from the mainland, but is about a two and a half hour drive from the HIP Agriculture education site.
For each course, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring, HIP Agriculture staff will pick up students at the Kona airport (KOA) at 7pm the Thursday and Saturday before classes are scheduled to begin for a fee of $20. If a student’s flight gets in later than 7pm, they should notify HIP Agriculture staff ahead of time so that the the pick up schedule might be adjusted. If students wish to arrive earlier in order to explore the island a bit they must either meet us back at the Kona airport for the scheduled pick up or arrange their own transportation to the HIP Agriculture Halawa campus in North Kohala, right outside of Kapaau Town.
FLIGHTS
Both Alaskan Airlines (alaskaair.com) and Hawaiian Airlines (hawaiianair.com) fly into Kona (KOA) and have helpful “low fair finder” views of their calendar featured on their website.
