At Kohala Wishing Well

The Kohala Food Hub (KFH) was developed by HIP Agriculture to address multiple needs within our community and the State of Hawaii. We noticed that many farmers in our community, including ourselves, lacked access to cold storage. This limited our ability to aggregate and store produce, which is a vital element for farmers to access new markets and increase production. Increasing production and community infrastructure has never been more important. As Hawai‘i State institutions strive to increase procurement of local food, it is imperative that procedures, programs, and infrastructure be developed to enable all of Hawai‘i’s farmers to participate in this tremendous opportunity.

Across the nation, communities are seeing the critical role food hubs play in revitalizing local food systems. Food hubs work to elevate market access for local farmers, increase food production and community access, build education and economic opportunity for youth, and to serve the community and anchor institutions (schools, hospitals, food assistance programs, etc.) Regional food production and distribution is the future of sustainable, regenerative agriculture. Rural farmers need access to food safe processing facilities and reliable local markets to meet their challenges and needs. Regional food hubs help farmers meet Good Agricultural Practices and FSMA regulations and work cooperatively with other producers to create long term economic success.

Through generous investments by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the State of Hawaii we have been able to revitalize a local facility at Kohala Wishing Well in Hawi. The food hub offers cold and freezer storage access and a wash pack facility for small local food producers. The ultimate goal of the food hub is to increase the amount of local food grown, aggregated, and distributed to our community members and institutions. In turn this will support farmers in gaining access to new markets and increase their income and long-term sustainability. We recognize this project as a long-standing dream of multiple community organizations, individuals, funders, and legislative stakeholders.

In order to support the increase distribution and consumption of local produce we have launched an online marketplace. Farmers and backyard growers are able to use the platform to post what produce they have available. Buyers are able to make purchases within a purchasing window (Friday to Monday). After the purchasing window Growers will know exactly how much to harvest based on what was ordered. So while it's easy for customers, producers will also have peace of mind knowing the products they harvest and deliver are already sold. Kohala Food Hub will support with order management, receiving, sorting, and packing the produce orders for weekly pick-up or delivery.
